2013 Oscar Nominations Announced

The 2013 Oscar nominees were announced this morning.  Film lovers everywhere will surely be playing catch-up to see some of the films nominated. Of particular interest to us is to spotlight  those films nominated that have either a US-Latino, Latin American, or Spanish theme, cast, or production. The Oscars air on Sunday February 24th on ABC 4PM/PST.

Argo has seven nominations including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Film Editing, Music (Original Score), Sound Editing, Sound Mixing – Jose Antonio Garcia, Writing (Adapted Screenplay) . The film is inspired by the  true-life account of former CIA agent Tony Mendez, author of The Master of Disguise.

No is a Chilean production directed by Pablo Larraín nominated for Foreign Language Film.  Gael Garcia Bernal stars in this drama about an ad man that put together the campaign to defeat Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet back in 1988.

Claudio Miranda

Claudio Miranda is nominated for Cinematography for Life of Pi. This is his second nomination having been nominated in the same category in 2009 for The Curious Life of Benjamin Button.  Miranda was born in Chile.

 

 

Paco Delgado

Paco Delgado is nominated for Costume Design for Les Misérables. Delgado is a Spanish born costume designer with a long list of film credits including  the Almodovar films- The Skin I Live In and  Bad Education.

 

Sixto Rodriguez

Searching for Sugarman is nominated for Feature Documentary. The subject of the film is Sixto Rodriguez, a 70’s Mexican-American folk singer who was a cult-hero in South Africa but unknown and  forgotten elsewhere.

 

 

Inocente is nominated for Documentary Short Subject. This is an inspiring film about a homeless, undocumented teen in San Diego pursuing her passion for life and art. Inocente narrates the film.

Fresh Guacamole is nominated for Short Film (Animated). There’s nothing more Mexican than guacamole.
